COACH HOWIE'S FIGHT AGAINST BLINDNESS

Dear Friends, Family and Community:
Last year my dad was diagnosed with Macular Degeneration. It is a degenerative disease of the eyes that eventually causes blindness. Dad just retired last year from 35 years of public school teaching. He was an auto mechanics teacher in my home town of Casper Wyoming. Everyone in the community knew that if they had car trouble, my dad would help. In preparation for his retirement he built an amazing garage in the back yard fit with all of the best equipment, and I can already imagine the cars lining his alley. He has always taught me that if someone needs help, you help them, no questions asked, and you never expect something in return. Because of this he has never charged a dime for all of his work. Cars are just the beginning of my dad's mechanical skills. In our family he is known as the fixer because he can fix anything. For example, there have been many Triathlons where he has fixed my bike before the big day. He is also a hero to the kids in the family for fixing toys. When my oldest son was first learning to talk he broke a toy and instantly said, "Papa fix it!" Above all, Dad's passion is restoring old cars. The idea of taking something old and discarded and giving it new life is his biggest thrill. It's amazing what he can do with a pile of junk! In high school I drove a beautiful souped up 62 Chevy Belair that dad restored. He is already working on a hot rod 33 Chevy for my oldest son.

The thought of my dad being blind is absolutely devastating because his life’s passions utilize his sight. This is why I joined The Foundation Fighting Blindness. Please consider helping us in an effort to help people, like my Dad, who are facing Macular Degeneration or may face blindness.

How you can help

In order to raise money for the Foundation Fighting Blindness I have set up a fund raising campaign through the Janus Charity Challenge for my biggest race of the season, Ironman Wisconsin. All of the funds I raise will go to the The Foundation Fighting Blindness.

Please consider making a donation to my account through this link. http://januscharitychallenge.kintera.org/wi09/howie

In addition to Ironman Wisconsin I have registered for 4 different races that raise funds for The Foundation Fighting Blindness.

  1. 5430 Sprint Triathlon
  2. 5430 Boulder Peak Triathlon
  3. 5430 Long Course Triathlon
  4. Wild On Windsor Triathlon

Together, we can make a difference in the lives of children and adults living with this corrosive disease that leads to blindness. Proceeds from these events will further the advancement of research into treatments and cures of retinal degenerative diseases. Thank you so much for your support!
